THE GEORGE YOUNG NATIONAL GRANT

The Ed Block Courage Award Foundation lost a devoted friend when revered NFL executive George Young died on December 8, 2001 of a rare neurological disease. Predicated upon the tremendous impact that he had upon the Foundation and its National Grant, the organization decided to honor his legacy by renaming its contribution to new members of the Courage House National Support Network for Kids as The George Young National Grant. The official announcement was made by NFL Commissioner and President of NFL Charities, Paul Tagliabue on March 5, 2002 during the 24th Annual Ed Block Courage Awards. The Foundation presented the first George Young National Grant, in the amount of $10,000, to the Buffalo Bills’ Courage House upon its dedication on October 26, 2002 as the newest member of the Courage House National Support Network for Kids. The Foundation has forever linked Young’s name to a program that he helped launch over a decade ago. He will continue to be associated with compassion, generosity and the desire to help improve the communities that comprise the NFL.

The Foundation formulated the original National Grant in honor of the NFL Commissioner’s Office. Initially, the Foundation annually donated $10,000 to NFL Charities to be used to help improve the lives of abused children in NFL cities across the nation. Young played an important role in the development of the National Grant. In 1990, Young, then general manager of the New York Giants, accepted the Foundation’s inaugural donation to NFL Charities during a pre-game ceremony at Giants’ Stadium. However, in November, 1994, the process was reversed when William Clay Ford, president of the Detroit Lions, presented a NFL Charities Grant in the amount of $35,000 to the Ed Block Courage Award Foundation.

The George Young National Grant represents the partnership between the NFL and the Ed Block Courage Award Foundation. The partnership expands with each Courage House that is dedicated as a member of the Courage House National Support Network for Kids. Currently, the Courage House National Support Network for Kids is comprised of more than 50-percent of the teams in the NFL.
